About the organization

The Indian society was characterized by caste system form the days of the early Aryan settlers. The caste system was based on particular occupation. The Aryan settlers introduced the fourfold division of castes in Kerala. Caste system is the orderly arrangement of the various groups of people in a hierarchy with the 'Brahmin's at the top and 'sudras' at the bottom. 'Kshrtiya and 'vaisya occupy second and third place in the Order. This division of system is called CHATHURVARNYA. The Brahmins being priestly order wielded great influences over the others. The ruling families were recognized as Kshatriyas. They have military duties also. The bulk of the people were stigmatized as 'sudras' while a few were recognized as vysias. What ever be the cause and origin of the caste system, its impact on society was far-reaching. Caste was not a mere label. It was a way of life, rigid in the extreme; every individual lived in a hierarchical world. Both high caste and low caste were fettered by rules and conventions. The principle of treating each group following a particular occupation as a separate caste and of prohibiting intercaste marriage and inter-dining between them. The position of the scheduled caste and scheduled tribes was far below the caste system. Infact, they were outside the castes system. They were called 'panchamas' -out castes ' Avaranas-'They were known as untouchable, depressed classes, backward classes etc. It is the Scheduled castes and Tribes who suffer the age old stigma of untouchability which is the dividing stone of discriminations and disabilities covering their entire activities of life. The SC/ST are mainly engaged in agricultural and allied activities. But majority of them were Landless. Even for constructing a house they had to depend upon others for the house sites. They were agricultural labourers toiling morning to night for earning a livelihood and were attached to land. The under nourished food, filthy habits wretched conditions, of life and ignorance made their life miserable and somewhat similar to animals. The social movements, political awakening and socio-political revolutions of the latter part of 19th century made gradual changes to the society. The gradual spread of education has kindled awareness in the consciousness of some of these peoples that the unification of the downtrodden is the only way out for their backwardness and all kinds of discrimination and humiliation they are made to suffer. The Temple Entry Proclamation issued by The Maharaja of Travancore in 1936 was milestone in the field of reforms relating to the eradication of untouchability.
